Dog-Friendly Dining at the Jersey Shore: What You Need to Know

The Jersey Shore is one of the best places in New Jersey to dine out with your dog — between the beachfront boardwalks, outdoor patios, and pet-welcoming local spots, there are great options up and down the coast. Here's how to make the most of it.

NJ Outdoor Dining with Dogs: The Rules

In New Jersey, dogs are generally permitted in outdoor dining areas at restaurants that allow them — but it's always at the restaurant's discretion and subject to local health codes. A few ground rules before you go:

  • Always call ahead or check the restaurant's website before bringing your dog
  • Your dog must stay on leash and remain on the ground (not on furniture or laps near food)
  • Dogs should be well-behaved enough not to disturb other diners
  • Keep water on hand — hot patio surfaces and sun exposure can dehydrate dogs quickly

Where to Look for Dog-Friendly Spots

Asbury Park

Asbury Park has become one of the most dog-friendly towns on the Shore. The boardwalk and Convention Hall area have several outdoor bar and restaurant patios that regularly accommodate well-behaved dogs. The town has a notably relaxed, pet-welcoming culture — you'll see dogs everywhere, from coffee shops to outdoor concerts.

Red Bank

Red Bank's walkable downtown has multiple restaurants with outdoor seating, and the pet-friendliness varies by location. The Navesink waterfront areas have some of the most scenic dining options. Red Bank also hosts dog-friendly events through the year, including outdoor farmers markets where dogs are common.

Long Branch

The Pier Village area at Long Branch has outdoor dining with ocean views and is generally dog-accommodating outside of peak summer hours. The beachfront promenade itself is great for a post-meal walk.

Point Pleasant Beach

The boardwalk area has several casual outdoor spots. Outside of summer peak season, the atmosphere is more relaxed and dog-friendly. Autumn is arguably the best time to visit — cooler temps, fewer crowds, dogs welcome everywhere.

Ocean Grove

This charming Victorian village adjacent to Asbury Park has a handful of cafes and outdoor eateries that are generally welcoming to leashed dogs. The shaded streets and Victorian architecture make for an excellent walking town before or after a meal.

Tips for Dining Out With Your Dog

  • Go off-peak: Weekday lunches and early dinners are easier with dogs — less foot traffic, less stimulation, less chance of your dog reacting to passing crowds
  • Bring a mat or blanket: A familiar spot for your dog to lie down helps them settle at an unfamiliar table
  • Choose shaded seating: Hot patios in summer can overheat dogs quickly, especially dark-coated breeds
  • Practice basic commands: A dog who reliably knows "down" and "stay" is welcome at any outdoor dining situation
  • Tire them out first: A dog who's had a proper walk before dining out will lie quietly under the table. A dog who hasn't will be a handful.

Always Confirm Before You Go

Dog policies change seasonally and by location. What was dog-friendly last summer might not be this year. The safest approach: call ahead, check their Google listing or website, or look for "dog-friendly" tags on Google Maps or Yelp for the specific location you're visiting.
