Core vaccines (recommended for all puppies)

  • DA2PP/DHPP: Distemper, Adenovirus (Hepatitis), Parvovirus, Parainfluenza
  • Rabies: Required by law in most areas; protects against a fatal disease

Puppy schedule by age

6–8 weeks

  • DA2PP/DHPP: first dose
  • Fecal test and deworming as needed

9–12 weeks

  • DA2PP/DHPP: second dose
  • Consider Bordetella if boarding, daycare, or classes
  • Leptospirosis may start here in higher‑risk regions

12–16 weeks

  • DA2PP/DHPP: third dose (final in puppy series)
  • Rabies: single dose (timing varies by local regulations)
  • Leptospirosis booster if started earlier

1 year after final puppy shots

  • DA2PP/DHPP booster
  • Rabies booster (1‑ or 3‑year based on vaccine/local law)

Lifestyle (non‑core) vaccines

  • Leptospirosis: Outdoor water/wildlife exposure; often paired with DA2PP
  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough): Boarding, daycare, grooming, classes
  • Lyme: High‑tick regions or frequent hiking/camping
  • Canine Influenza: Boarding/daycare outbreaks or mandates

Common mild side effects

  • Sleepiness, mild soreness at injection site
  • Low‑grade fever or decreased appetite for 24–48 hours
  • Tiny lump at injection site that resolves in a few weeks

Get urgent help for facial swelling, hives, vomiting, breathing issues, or collapse — these are signs of a rare allergic reaction.

Before and after visit tips

  • Bring stool sample if requested; note any past reactions
  • Keep puppies on the floor or in a carrier until fully vaccinated
  • After shots, plan a quiet day with light activity and water access
  • Avoid dog parks/public floors until 1 week after final DA2PP

FAQ

What if my puppy missed a dose?

Don’t restart from the beginning. Your vet will continue the series based on the last dose date and age, then give a final dose at or after 16 weeks.

Can I socialize my puppy before fully vaccinated?

Yes — controlled, clean environments with healthy, fully vaccinated dogs are encouraged. Avoid dog parks and high‑traffic public floors until the final DA2PP has taken effect.

Do small breeds need a different schedule?

The timing is the same. Your vet may adjust dose formulations. Discuss any prior vaccine sensitivities.
